It was a Thursday afternoon at work and I had a really bad case of ants in my pants. I couldn’t sit still at work I was on my lunch break going crazy. I sat outside and gazed at my beautiful snow filled Mt. Baldy eating a subway sandwich (that’s a 6 inch cold cut every time). I finally pulled out my phone and dialed Vero. “Hey girl…umm you wanna to mammoth tomorrow? I know its 6 hours away...yes…well I work too. Cool! Done deal we will leave Friday after work.” It was that easy...
I made reservations for us to stay in this cute little hostel. Friday after work I pulled up to her house, loaded up the boots and took off! Road trip! Nothing like a 6 hour drive full of girl talk, candy (that’s for me) and red bulls. Life was great… that is until we realized we drove an hour in the wrong direction. This means our 6 hour road trip has now turned into and 8 hour trip…and we took off at 5:30pm after work!
8:00PM: Two girls grumpy and refusing to talk… we made 2 wrong turns when getting onto the freeway… this adds another hour to our trips
9:00PM: Fun girl talk about shopping, boys, and life. Once again having a great time and chatting away.
12:30AM: Vero’s falling asleep. Every time she would dozes off I would smack her and tell her we were going to crash if she closes her eyes
1:00AM: Alone on a pitch black highway. A light appears and I swerve the car screaming it’s a UFO! Vero screams "You're going crazy Gema!"
1:30AM: Vero jumps up in the passenger seat. “Oh my god! I though I was driving” (she had fallen asleep)
2:00AM: “Vero do you think we would freeze if we just pull over and sleep on the side of the road?”
2:30AM: We drove up and down the streets in Mammoth looking for the stupid hostel. Alas! I pulled up, scratched my car on the ice, and broke my phone trying to unload the car. At this point I so tired I didn’t even care. We stumbled into the hostel, found our beds and passed out.
Its funny how one event can completely change your life. Staying with us in the hostel were two other people who will later add many adventures of playing out side. Detour to Mammoth brought us the UK.
